Oral Pathology

Identifying Critical Warning Signs
Pathological changes can manifest on the lips, tongue, gums, and the mucosal lining throughout your mouth. It is highly important to note that pain does not always occur alongside these changes. Key warning signs include red or white patches in the mouth, a sore that bleeds easily and fails to heal, or an unexplained lump or thickening on the mucosa. Additional systemic symptoms to watch for include a chronic sore throat or hoarseness, difficulty in chewing or swallowing, unexplained swelling, and numbness of the lips or chin not attributable to another cause.
Comprehensive Examination and Diagnosis
Proactive screening is your strongest defense against oral pathology. If you experience or notice any of the warning signs listed above, you should immediately have your dentist perform a clinical exam or contact our North Vancouver clinics so our specialized team can perform a thorough examination. If an abnormality is indicated during your consultation, we will perform a precise surgical biopsy to obtain a definitive diagnosis and guide your next steps.

FAQ
Recognizing Normal vs. Abnormal Tissue
The inside of your mouth is normally lined with a special type of skin known as mucosa, which should appear smooth and pink in color. Any alteration in this normal appearance is considered a “lesion” and could be an early warning sign of a pathological process. While not all changes indicate a severe issue, the most serious of these potential conditions is oral cancer, making early detection and professional screening absolutely critical for your overall health.
